The pub is named after William Wells. He was one of the people involved in draining Whittlesey Mere - which was once England's largest Southern lake. The group of wealthy men drained the mere to turn it into profitable agriculture land. After several failed attempts, they eventually succeeded in 1852 and the Mere was dry.
