SHRINKING ARCHIVE
Back -->
Holme Fen has the largest Silver Birch woodland in lowland England.
During lockdown I spent everyday in the woodland running and walking, I noticed how the bark of the trees would peel off the trunk leaving open red marks like skin/flesh. It looked raw and painful for the tree, but apparently it comes off naturally - unless pulled.

The curls of bark come off in reels, and look like 35mm film, I have spliced some I found on the floor together to make a film.

Silver Birch is associated with healing and new beginnings me and friend wrote our wishes on bits of birch and threw them in the boating lake in Peterborough.
Birch bark rolls discovered as part of the Star Carr archaeological dig, near Scarborough, thought to be around 11,000-year-old.

I came across these whilst I was doing some research in the Scarborough Museum Trusts collections. Archeologists are not fully sure what they would have been used for, or why they were found in the excavation.
